Forming an International Working Group for the Protection of Refugee Women and Children:
From Words on Paper to Actions on the Ground
The Centre for Refugee Research advocated for UNHCR’s Executive Committee to adopt a Conclusion for the protection of refugee women and girls. This was achieved with the adoption of the Conclusion on Women and Girls at Risk, No 105, in 2006.
In 2007, the Centre for Refugee Research invited organisations from around the world to join them in forming an international Working Group of non-government organisations (particularly those working on the protection of forcibly displaced women and girls) and UNHCR, to advocate for the implementation of the commitments made in the Conclusion. The Working Group aims to effectively monitor, advocate and provide support for the implementation of the 2006 Conclusion on the Protection of Women and Girls at Risk.
The working group is an unfunded endeavour and relies on participation of members to progress the aims of the group. CRR has established a Protection for Refugee Women website.
